Andy Dalton, 41, from Finchfield but now living in New Zealand, was diagnosed with a rare incurable cancer a few weeks ago after initially visiting a doctor for shortness of breath.

Now her family and friends are organizing a fundraiser in town to help support her children and pay for treatment that may prolong her life.

She was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive anaplastic thyroid cancer after it was found to be blocking her airway and could not be removed during surgery.

The father now has a tracheostomy, which means he can’t speak and is too ill to travel.

Andy’s family say the treatment he needs to prolong his life is not funded by the New Zealand health system and would have to be privately funded.

They hope to raise $50,000, which is the equivalent of around £25,000.

On the Give A Little page created by Andy’s partner, Amanda O’Connor, it says: “The medication targeting the BRAF mutation will start on November 1, 2022. Unfortunately, this is not funded and costs $5,500. New Zealanders per month.

“The next step is the PDL-1 drug. This is also an unfunded drug and they have suggested a cost of about $100,000 per year.”

Over $15,000 (NZ) has been raised since the page was launched on October 29.

A family fun event has been planned to help raise money for Andy, and is backed by Slade guitarist Dave Hill, who will make an appearance.

The fun day will take place on Sunday, November 20, at Victory Hall on Greyhound Lane in Lower Penn between 2 pm and 5 pm The family says everyone is welcome.

Meanwhile, the Dalton family and their friends are tirelessly trying to raise more funds online.

They already have over fifty raffle prizes including a weekend getaway, three £100 Smyths toy vouchers and various restaurant and beauty vouchers, all donated by Wolverhampton businesses.

Dave Hill will be there doing the drawing for the Grand Raffle and announcing the winners.

Unfortunately the cancer is incurable and the family has a poor prognosis with a maximum of three to six months.

Andy is currently undergoing radiation treatment and is starting a new treatment plan.

His cousin Lucy Rook, from Finchfield, said: “Our priority is to help where we can, both by making sure we contribute to the cost of treatment which we hope can buy Andy more time to create special memories with his children, but also in the provision of financial aid in general.

“The support we have received from Dave Hill and so many local businesses in just a few days has been incredible. We are all very grateful.”

That cash will help support Andy’s two children, Zavier, eight, and Emmy, four, at their home in Dunedin.

Lucy has been supported in organizing the event by another of Andy’s cousins, Charlotte Savage, and her friend Bibi Pugh.
