In anticipation of a harsh flu season, LA Care and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plans Community Resource Centers Host Free COVID-19 and Flu Vaccine Clinics in Los Angeles County | california blue shield

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 27, 2022) – Although the U.S. has seen low levels of influenza activity for the past two years, many health experts now project that a potentially severe influenza season is due, in part, to , to more relaxed pandemic safety measures, such as lifting mask mandates, and winter infection trends in southern hemisphere countries. To address those concerns, LA Care and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plans Community Resource Centers will offer free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to members and the public at several nearby clinics throughout Los Angeles County.

The clinics, which are free and open to all, will be held Oct. 28-Nov. 15 at four of the health plan’s 10 jointly-operated locations in Lynwood, El Monte, Koreatown and Inglewood. People who get a flu or COVID-19 shot at these clinics will receive free gifts like turkey coupons or grocery gift cards, while supplies last.

“More than two years of mask wearing and social distancing helped keep the flu at bay, and with these safety measures now modified, we must continue to do everything we can to reduce the risk of infection,” said Richard Seidman, MD, MPH, medical director of LA Care. “With highly effective influenza and COVID-19 vaccines widely available, we must do our part to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our neighbors who may be more vulnerable to these two viruses.”

This flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults age 65 and older get a high-dose or adjuvant flu vaccine to offer greater protection, as they are considered a more vulnerable group. Three of the four vaccine clinics housed in the Resource Center will have the high-dose formulation available for this age group.

“Blue Shield Promise Health Plan is encouraged that so many people have taken the necessary steps to stay safe from COVID-19 and the flu. However, we cannot lower our guard now. We must vigilantly continue to help protect our communities by offering protection against the flu and COVID-19 viruses as we head into the winter months,” said James Cruz, MD, medical director of Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “We are proud to bring free flu and COVID-19 vaccines to the Los Angeles County communities we serve and encourage everyone to get vaccinated to stay healthy.”

The immunization clinics will also give visitors the opportunity to see the variety of services offered at the LA Care and Blue Shield Promise Community Resource Centers. The Resource Centers offer a variety of free classes, programs and services that aim to improve the health and wellness of members and local residents in surrounding communities, including addressing social needs.
