A new study reveals misconceptions about ‘damaged hair’

Ask a group of women what their number one concern is when it comes to their hair and they’ll probably tell you ‘damage’. Because between styling, washing, and central heating, our precious ends have a lot to deal with.

But, there is more to the story. A new global study on hair by Dyson revealed that while more than 7 in 10 of us believe our hair is damaged, citing the likes of Hair loss and dandruff, there is a collective misconception about what constitutes ‘damaged’.

‘Dandruffhair loss and gray hair are not forms of damage, but the scalp and Hair growth concerns,’ explains Rob Smith, senior hair scientist at Dyson. “Hair damage refers to the breakdown of the hair cuticle and cortex, which can make your hair look frizzy, dull, or break.”

How to know if you have damaged hair

One of the easiest ways to check if you really have damaged hair is to take a strand of hair between your fingers and gently pull each end; if it stretches to about a third of its length, then your hair is damage free.

But if it breaks or stretches, without returning to its original length, this could be a sign of dryness and/or damage.

So how can you prevent such a thing from happening in the first place?

Be careful with over-washing

Fact: 8 out of 10 people wash their hair every day, according to a new Dyson global hair study. And although subjective depending on the type of hair and the environment, this can be one of the real culprits of causing damage.

“Over-washing can be very damaging, stripping the scalp’s natural oils and leaving hair feeling dry,” says Smith. “In general, the oilier your hair or scalp is, the more often you can consider washing your hair. Straight hair can feel limp more easily due to oil buildup, while waves, curls, and coils absorb oil and require less washing.

“Be aware of pollution levels in your environment, and remove pollution from your hair as well, as a combination of pollution and ultraviolet elements can cause higher levels of damage to your hair,” adds Smith. You can do this by incorporating a weekly scalp scrub into your routine. Look for those that clean or rinse the scalp without using strong acids that can strip it of natural oils.

Opt for wet or dry stylers

Invest in a microfiber towel

    If you are using heat styling tools, it would also be wise to use a paddle brush. “When straightening hair, it’s always good to use a flat brush that allows air to flow through the hair, straightening it and creating shine,” adds King.
