For normal to slightly dry hair, Abbey suggests shampooing two to three times a week. “On days you don’t wash, be sure to brush regularly to distribute oils evenly throughout your hair and help prevent dry ends.” And for very dry or damaged hair, Abbey recommends shampooing no more than once or twice a week. “Because the pH of water can dry out this type of hair, limiting exposure to water helps.”
It is important to use the right products for your hair type, as they directly affect the scalp. For fine, limp or oily hair, Abbey recommends a sulfate-free shampoo to prevent hair from losing its natural oils and drying out the hair and scalp. For the conditioner, he says a protein or keratin-based product will help build body and strengthen hair. If you find that conditioners can be heavy on your hair, try washing it in reverse, using the conditioner first, then the shampoo.
For normal to medium to slightly dry hair, a moisture-rich shampoo and hydrating conditioner are best for keeping your hair and scalp healthy all year long. For damaged or very dry hair, use a moisturizing co-wash or shampoo and a heavier treatment or mask-type conditioner.

Getting moisture into the hair is not always enough.
